The Daily 5 is a reading program that students do 5 literacy activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing and Word Work. During The Daily 5 the students decide the order of how they complete the activities. While the students are doing this, I am meeting with students for small group reading or writing instruction.
The CAFE Strategies are reading strategies that help improve Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary. I will be teaching 1-2 new reading strategies every week. It is expected that the students practice these strategies during The Daily 5 and in other reading.
Read to Self
In order to become a better reader, students must read every day. During this time students will be reading to themselves with a "Good Fit Book". After every page or paragraph (depending on the length of the book) the students must Check For Understanding. They will ask themselves, "Who's in it?" and "What's happening?" If they do not answer these questions correctly they need to go back and reread.
Read to Someone
When students read to a partner they are able to practice more reading strategies, check for understanding, utilize word accuracy strategies and build fluency. The students can be reading the same book or two different books during this time.
Listen to Reading
In order for students to become more fluent readers they need to listen to fluent reading. During this time the students can go to a listening center for a book on tape or go to Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is an online reading program that can be also be accessed from home.
Work on Writing
Just like with Read to Self, in order for students to become better writers they must write every day. During this time students must finish their writing from Being a Writer if it is not finished. If it is finished then the writing becomes free choice.
Word Work
Expanding vocabulary and spelling practice are done during this time.
